If you’ve signed up for your first HYROX race.
You’re preparing for an event that combines repeated 1 km runs with functional workout stations. What you wear should help you stay comfortable, move freely and avoid unnecessary distractions as fatigue builds.
Here’s what to prioritise.
Top: Lightweight and Moisture-Wicking
Choose a lightweight training top that manages sweat and remains comfortable when wet.
- Prioritise breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics.
- Avoid heavy cotton, which can hold moisture and become uncomfortable.
- Choose a fit that allows unrestricted movement through sled work, burpees, rowing and wall balls.
Tip: Wear something you have already trained in. Race day is not the time to test unfamiliar clothing.
Shorts or Leggings: Prioritise Movement
Choose bottoms that stay secure and comfortable through both running and functional movements.
- Lightweight training shorts with stretch work well for many athletes.
- Leggings or fitted shorts can offer extra support and reduce excess movement.
- Avoid anything that rides up, slips or restricts range of motion.
Socks: Reduce Friction
Technical running socks can help manage moisture and reduce the risk of rubbing and blisters.
Avoid thick cotton socks if you know they become heavy or uncomfortable when wet.
Shoes: Balance Running and Stability
HYROX demands a compromise between running comfort and stability during functional stations.
Look for:
- Secure grip
- Stable platform
- Responsive cushioning
- Comfortable fit over repeated 1 km runs
Different athletes prefer different shoes, so use footwear you have already tested in both running and functional training.
Accessories: Keep It Familiar
If you normally train with gloves, knee sleeves, a headband or similar accessories, bring them if they help.
The key is familiarity. Do not introduce new equipment on race day unless necessary.
After the Race
Bring a dry layer or change of clothing for afterwards. Once you stop moving, cooling down quickly in damp kit can become uncomfortable.
Dress for Performance
Your first HYROX is not about wearing the most technical kit available. It is about choosing clothing and footwear that let you move freely, stay comfortable and focus on the race itself.
